The Runaway Barack
It’s a busy time of year, so I’m glad that last week, when Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) announced his presidential exploratory committee, I limited my commentary to my actual feelings about his chances. “Ho hum,” I wrote. And ho hum it was, because today he dropped out of the race to spend more time with his constituents.
Beltway insiders (basically everyone who lives between Scaggsville, MD and Richmond, VA) opine that the intensity of the press’ coverage of last week’s Obama-rama scared Bayh off the hustings. Same thing happened to former Gov. Mark Warner (D-VA) a couple months ago when he shared the stage with Obama in Iowa. Now that the Illinois senator is the undisputed living Elvis, lesser rock stars don’t even want to bother unpacking their equipment to compete against him in the battle of the bands.
The media frenzy covering the The Runaway Barack didn’t faze Rep. Dennis Kucinich, however. The former boy mayor of Cleveland, OH threw his bandana in the presidential ring this week, much to everyone’s – including his family and staff’s – surprise. He was my son’s choice in 2004, but only because he thought he was a Hobbit. Now that my boy has matured to the ripe old age of eight, he’s not all that enthralled with Kucinich anymore. But presumably Dennis has internal polling showing that the other dozen or so people who voted for him in 2004 are still solidly in his camp.
I happen to agree with a lot of what Dennis Kucinich has to say. He’s been right about the war from jump street, and advocates for the usual laundry list of social justice issues supported by progressives. It’s just that Marianne Williamson connection, and the fact that he’s completely unelectable, that keep me from sending him a couple a bucks…
