Does America Deserve Another McCaining?
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has publicly announced that he’s officially exploring the distinct possibility that he might be running for president in 2008. Finally. Because I was beginning to wonder whether McCain would pull the trigger on another run at the White House after he made only 346 personal campaign appearances for Republicans around the country, and donated a paltry $10.5 million to their mid-term campaigns.
Whether this will be the old St. John the Reformer from 2000, or the new and improved Pastor John and his Traveling Family Values Show, we can only guess. After the routing the Republicans took last Tuesday, he may be re-thinking his Bush II strategy. Bush’s post-election approval rating, according to Newsweek, is at a personal low of 31%.
Whichever McCain we’re graced with this election cycle, he’s sure to be less entertaining than he was in 2000 when he was the straight talk meister, the insurgent, the maverick…oh, let’s be honest – he was never any of those things. But he is a good politician, and he never tires of humbly reminding the American people of the debt of gratitude we owe to his sketchy flying skills.
Of course, if not for Adm. John McCain Sr. and Adm. John McCain II, Ensign John McCain III, who graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis, might never have gotten into flight school anyway. But then, if not for his rich and influential new father-in-law, he could never have moved to Arizona in 1981 and gotten elected to congress in 1982. But it’s going to take a lot more than Don Imus to grease the skids for McCain on his way to the presidency. And if he’s relying on George W. Bush to be his ace in the hole for 2008, he definitely needs a new sugar daddy.
