Senator John McCain the pollsters’ favorite Republican candidate for president in 2008, is showing his true colors. Again. And by that I don’t mean the John McCain who took $200K from the felonious Charles Keating and then offered up a mea culpa in the form of the McCain-Feingold Bill – but not before he committed the same bit of pay-to-play shenanigans with Bill Paxson, the holy-rolling proprietor of PAX TV. No, the real John McCain is a much more dangerous phony than that.
After lashing himself to the Bush war wagon from the get-go, according to Paul Kiel at TPMuckraker, McCain has now taken a shine to the White House’s penchant for breaking the law by ignoring it. Bush’s use of “Presidential Signing Statements,” more accurately described as “The W Dodge,” has allowed the administration to ignore inconvenient laws passed by the Republican-controlled Congress 750 times. This includes McCain’s own anti-torture amendment to the most recent Defense Appropriations Bill, which evidently was way too touchy-feely for the chicken hawks running the war show.
Is this a peek inside how President McCain might give us more of the Bush same-old-same-old? Seems likely. Next time he comes to NH, we’ll ask him
