The undisputed prince of the NH Republican hackocracy, Tom Rath, a former NH Att’y General and one of NH’s two representatives to the Republican National Committee, has signed on as a senior adviser to Gov Mitt Romney’s (R-MA) Commonwealth PAC, the stalking horse for Romney’s inevitable presidential candidacy. Rath says he will resign his spot on the RNC, including a powerful position on the rules committee. Rath also says he supports Romney because of the governor’s, strong fiscal conservatism and commitment to traditional family values...”
Rath’s political advice is by no means a guarantor of electoral success – over the past several decades he’s advised the presidential campaigns of Howard Baker, Bob Dole, and Lamar Alexander. In 2000, after his two-cycle affair with Alexander ended when the former Education Sec’y dropped out for lack of money and support (two fairly essential ingredients for a presidential campaign), he switched to George W. Bush’s camp. Bush went on to lose the NH first-in-the-nation presidential primary to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) by 18 percentage points.
Romney was in Washington DC over the weekend pandering to the Family Research Council’s “Values Voters Action Summit,” a gathering of 1500 evangelical Christian right-wing activists getting themselves frothy and motivated for the final 45 days of the 2006 mid-term elections.
As the governor of the only state in the union that allows same sex marriage, Romney told the God Hates Fags crowd that a federal marriage amendment, proclaiming that, “marriage is exclusively the union between one man and one woman” is “absolutely necessary” because the only thing currently blocking the interstate commerce clause from forcing other states to recognize gay marriages performed in MA, is a 1913 MA law prohibiting couples who were not allowed to marry in their own states from coming to MA and getting hitched. The law was written to prevent interracial couples in Talabama from getting married in MA. Mitt is afraid that, “Massachusetts could become the gay Las Vegas.”
Romney’s 5-point plan for saving America from secular humanism and bread and butter socialism includes ending the Jihadist threat through increased military action; assisting American corporations in their battle against Asia’s burgeoning economic ascendancy; cutting the federal budget; using less oil, and; fixing America’s culture. Culture is a buzz-word for unrestricted prayer in the public schools, passing the federal marriage amendment, overturning Roe v. Wade, and sacrificing a goat at the start of the president’s State of the Union address. Okay, I made that last one up.
