Do You Still Beat Your War?
Wolf Blitzer asked it of Ted Turner; Bill O’Reilly sprang it on David Letterman: Gary Bauer asks it of every Democrat he meets: “Do you want us to win in Iraq?” Please.
“No” is a ridiculous answer, irrespective of your politics or views on the war. Nobody in America wants to lose anything, much less another war. But if you say “Yes,” then that implies occupying Iraq long after Bush’s presidency has mercifully ended. You also accept an untold number of deaths still to come, hundreds of billions of dollars more to be spent, and the deep rift in American political discourse further widening.
It’s a false set of choices, so if you bump into Gary Bauer, don’t fall for it. It’s pure sophistry, a “do you still beat your wife?” logical cul de sac, and a really stupid question. The only sensible answer is “Win what?”
The MSM is finally scrutinizing Karl Rove’s odd giddiness over the prospect of having his head handed to him next Tuesday. Not a chance, says Rove, the Democrats won’t get the 15 seats they need to take over the House, or get anywhere near the magic six needed to grab the Senate. He claims to have better polling data than everybody else . And that would be literally everybody. There isn’t a reputable national poll that doesn’t have the Dems winning more than 15 seats. I wonder, does Rove have polls with Bush above 50% and a majority of Americans in favor of the war? Because that’s what he needs.
“You’re entitled to your math, but I’m entitled to the math,” he told Robert Siegel on NPR. Maybe the math is a newly installed set of Republican-friendly algorithms from Diebold.
Just when the Republican contest in the NH 2008 presidential primary was shaping up to be a strictly McCain-Romney, “The Old and the Beautiful” yawner, in steps Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) to liven things up. The 12-term San Diego congressman is Chairman of the House Committee on Armed Services, and a close associate of former Rep Randy “Duke” Cunningham, also known as Inmate 9540325. Duncan and the Duke-stir had a lot friends in common. Maybe Hunter’s strategy is get himself elected president before his indictment comes down, and then pardon himself. And Duke too, of course.
