McCain and Condi Tie For…

Condi PeelThis headline could go a lot of places. Such as McCain and Condi Tie for who’s Further up Bush’s Evil Rump. Or McCain and Condi Tie for Which One is Ignored More by Bush. Or which is the least effective, while enjoying a reputation for competence. Or which will hold the all-time record for getting slimed in the SC primary. McCain was viciously manhandled down there in 2000, but try to imagine the whispering campaign they’ll conjure up to de-rail the African-American, unmarried Rice.

That’s if she were to run for president, which doesn’t appear likely. Nonetheless, the tie this story refers to is the Bow, NH Republican picnic straw poll, where her name was placed in contention as the token woman.

The way these things work is that everyone who buys a ticket, gets to vote. Traditionally, candidates paper the crowd with supporters, and the one with most friends and staff with nothing better to do on a warm summer Saturday afternoon, wins. Since Condi doesn’t have any campaign staff, and McCain seems hell-bent on hiring every Republican hack in the universe before anyone else can snatch them up, I’d have to give the tie-breaker to Condi. She didn’t win the NH presidential primary in 2000 by 18%, as McCain did, either.

Does this mean that the preponderance of Bow Republicans want, as the Unpresident likes to say, for America to “Stay the course”? Hard sayin’, not knowin’, but that’s certainly what it looks like. There are no two bigger war-boosters than these two.

Sen John McCain (R-AZ) 26%
Sec’y of State Condoleezza Rice (CA) 26%
Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (NY) 14 %
Gov George Pataki (NY) 12%
Sen George Allen (VA) 10%
Gov Mitt Romney (MA) 10%
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (GA) 2%

The other surprise was Mitt Romney’s anemic results. The discomfited governor of MA, which is a 40 minute ride down I-93 from Bow, also owns a house on Lake Winnipesauke, which is another 40 minutes up I-93. He campaigns here so often most Granite Staters see him more than we see our own governor. Yet he got beat by the uninspiring Gov George Pataki (NY).

Mitt’s not making much hay among NH Republicans, and that could be precisely because he’s from MA, where many of them escaped from; it could also be because of his religious affiliation; or it could be because of his bungling oversight on the Big Boondoggle, uhh, Dig. How about all three? Read more.

VA Sen George Allen tied Romney – a much better showing than he deserved in the wake of his Macaca comments. But he does speak French, which is NH’s second language. Allen’s mom Etty is from Tunisia, where Macaca is a racial slur against a person of color. Read more.

Unfortunately for Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani seems to have siphoned off all the Republican egomaniac, narcissist, and philanderer vote. Maybe Newt should become a Democrat.
