Anti-War Candidate Beats DCCC Annointed MugWump in NH’s First CD
Anti-war candidate and social worker, Carol Shea-Porter, routed NH’s House Democratic Leader, Jim Craig, last week in NH’s first CD primary contest.
Shea-Porter, Rochester’s Democratic chairman, beat Craig – who represents Manchester, NH’s largest city – by 20 points, despite spending only 20% of what Craig spent. Craig also had the endorsement of the DCCC. The national party rarely endorses candidates in primary races, but the vague and moderate Craig was considered the Dem’s best chance to beat incumbent Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-NH). Bradley’s opponent in the GOP primary, stonemason Michael Callis, spent $2K and got 15% of the vote.
Craig carried two-thirds of the vote in Manchester, but Shea-Porter rolled over him in the balance of the district, even in the Manchester collar-towns of Merrimack, Londonderry and Bedford.
"Oh, my god, I think I'm going to faint," Shea-Porter told her supporters at a victory party in Portsmouth late last night.
According to the most recent campaign fundraising reports, Shea-Porter raised $34,700 through Aug. 23, with $17,800 on hand. With the help of national Democrats, Craig raised $325,000 and reported $194,000 on hand.
This development clearly bodes well for anti-war candidates in particular, and Democrats in general this November.
