Kerik takes another bite from the Big Apple |

 Bernie Kerik leads a blessed life. Okay, his mother was a hooker, and that can’t be easy on a kid. But his adult life has been one giant leap forward after another. That is until last week when hit the wall. And even that could have been much, much worse.
Back in 2004, when Rudy Giuliani declined to become George W. Bush’s second Secretary of Fatherland Security, he offered a substitute, his business associate, Bernard Kerik. They went way back. As a Detective 3rd Grade, Kerik was Rudy’s volunteer driver in his 1993 mayoral campaign – a Giuliani Time early adopter. He did such a great job getting Rudy where he needed to be on time that Guiliani eventually made him NYC’s Commissioner of Corrections, and then promoted him again to be Police Commissioner, the job he held on September 11, 2001. After public life, Kerik followed him to Giuliani Associates to make some real money.
The Bush Administration did it’s typically inadequate vetting of Kerik and it was learned only after he was offered the job that unbeknownst to his wife, he kept a love nest on the side, and visited it regularly with his beautiful book publisher girlfriend (who dumped his lying ass when she learned his wife was pregnant).
Of course, once they start looking, there’s always more. And last week in Bronx County Court, Bernard Kerik acquired a criminal record…
Fun Fact:The Bernard B. Kerik Correctional Complex in Lower Manhattan is the only jail in the country named for a criminal.
Kerick: "I admit that I took a gift from the Interstate companies or a subsidiary, and thinking they were clean, I spoke to city officials about Interstate on two occasions and on another occasion permitted my office to be used for a meeting between Trade Waste authorities and representatives of Interstate," Mr. Kerik said.
Quid: $165K in improvements to his Bronx crib.
Quo: Greasing the skids for a mobbed-up company to get city contracts.
Crime: “Breaking city codes.”
Punishment: $221K fine (he pays $10K for his loafers)
His lawyer: Joe Tacopina, whose client list includes the late John Gotti, and Joseph “Joey Green Eyes” Anemone.
Question: Wouldn’t it still have been a crime if the company had been “clean”?
Verdict: It’s New York, whatever.
Significance: When and if Rudy runs.
